Doctors Walter Pierpaoli and William Regelson declare in their book, "The Melatonin Miracle", "Senescence, the downward spiral that we have come to associate with aging, does not have to occur. Melatonin can stop the spiral." When Dr. Pierpaoli, and Italian immunologist, restored youthful levels of melatonin in mice they exceeded their life expectancies by nearly a third. Other studies suggest that supplementing with melatonin may bolster our immune systems, keep our cells from disintegrating, slow the growth of tumors and cataracts, as well as ward off heart disease. Humans secrete melatonin cyclically from the pineal gland, a pea-sized gland nestled at the center of the brain, in response to the amount of light hitting our eyes. As darkness falls, the pineal gland produces a surge of melatonin that goes to all parts of the body. When light hits the retina of the eye, neural impulses signal the pineal gland to slow melatonin production. That is why you should sleep in a dark room! Melatonin readily permeates any cell in any part of the body including the brain. Melatonin is the premiere antioxidant nutrient known to man! Melatonin is a very potent antioxidant that fights excessive free radical activity throughout the body. Oxidation isn't the only reason we fall apart as we age. We also lose our immune function. The thymus gland shrinks over time, sapping our ability to generate infection-fighting T cells, and we produce fewer of the antibody molecules that bind with and neutralize foreign invaders, such as viruses and bacteria. Could all of this follow from a loss of melatonin? One of the best examples comes from Pierpaoli's mouse lab. A few years ago he paired 10 young mice with 10 old ones and had a micro-surgeon switch their pineal glands (old to the young and vice, versa). Before long, the youngsters were hobbling around with cataracts in their eyes and bald patches on their backs. The old ones gained muscle and energy, and their coats grew thick and shiny. Autopsies revealed what was probably part of the reason. The young mice had all but lost their thymus glands after the pineal transplant. In contrast, the thymus glands of the oldsters had been restored. Italian researchers have shown that a nightly melatonin supplement can boost the performance of immune systems compromised by age, drugs or stress. Where cancer is concerned, the evidence isn't limited to mouse studies. Autopsy studies suggest that pineal calcification (a condition that hardens the gland and reduces melatonin output) is most common in countries with high rates of breast cancer and least common in countries where breast cancer is rare. More and more studies are coming out all the time concerning its beneficial effect on the cancer healing process. At Hospital Santa Monica, they use a 50mg of melatonin every night for all their cancer patients. The explanation, ways Dr. Michael Cohen of Fairfax, VA, involves estrogen. Prolonged exposure to estrogen hormone (due to puberty, infrequent childbearing or late menopause) increases a woman's risk of breast cancer. But melatonin dampens the release of estrogen. Melatonin may also prove useful for fighting existing malignancies. Several studies have shown that it can slow the growth of human tumor cells in a test tube and some cancer specialists are now testing its effects on patients. Melatonin might help control cholesterol, regulate blood pressure and modulate the release of heart-killing stress hormones. But today's users just want a decent night's sleep and many will tell you they've found it. Dr. James Jan of Vancouver, British Columbia's Children's Hospital, has reported that bedtime doses of 2.5 to 10 mg help establish normal seep patterns in kids with neurological problems such as autism, epilepsy, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy. There are plenty of drugs that can bring on sleep, but they have well-known drawbacks. They tend to suppress the restorative dream state known as REM. They lose their effect over a period of time. They're addictive if used too often, and at high doses they can be lethal. Researchers have yet to report any of these problems with melatonin. When government scientists set out to find melatonin's "LD50" (the dose that's lethal to 50% of the animals receiving it) they couldn't make a rich enough concentrate to kill a mouse. When researchers fed human volunteers 6 gram (6000 mg) of the stuff every night for a month, stomach discomfort and some residual sleepiness were the only reported side effects. That's pretty darn safe! It is a fun product for researchers to work with because it has no known side effects, yet influences so many things that happen in the body. Do not be concerned about the vivid dreams you may experience for the first few nights after you begin using melatonin. These dreams are actually very cleansing and invigorating for the brain. this only occurs during a second phase of sleep known as REM which follows the first deep sleep cycle. Even though the dreams might seem to be vigorous, you are in a deep sleep and getting all the benefits of restful sleep. I would also like to inform you that only mentally stable people dream - those with mental problems do not dream. Dreams are one of the ways the brain can accomplish the removal of the waste and garbage. It's good for you! Expect this vivid dreaming to go on for as long as you are taking daily amounts of melatonin, although in less intense fashion.
