B121.jpg (461322 bytes)Why Are So Many People Deficient in B12

Several factors contribute to a large percentage of the population being deficient.  Bacteria in our intestinal tract produce not only B12 but other B vitamins as well.  A few decades ago our food was grown in soil rich with the organic matter that promotes the growth of intestinal flora.  Our fruits and vegetables were not so highly sanitized as they are today and they encouraged an optimal balance of intestinal flora that allowed the body to produce adequate levels of B12 as well as other B vitamins.  According to the "Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine" by Michael Murray, ND and Joseph Pizzorno, ND, the gastrointestinal tract is hot to as many as five hundred species of bacteria numbering as many as nine times the number of cells in the human body.  An imbalance in this flora may result from antibiotic and drug therapy, dietary disturbances such as antibiotic in animal products, altered pH, mal-absorption, stress, etc.

It is now known that B12 may be a factor in many conditions including:

anemia - cardiovascular disease - multiple sclerosis - neural tube defects (at birth) - myelin protein deficiency - neuro-psychiatric disorders - depression - mood swings - memory loss - optic and peripheral neurpathy

According to James Balch, M.D., and Phyllis Balch, C.N.C. in their book titled, Prescription for Nutritional Healing, not only is B12 needed to prevent anemia but it plays a role in a whole host of metabolic processes.  "It aids folic acid in regulating the formation of red blood cells, and helps in the utilization of iron.  This vitamin is also required for proper digestion, absorption of foods, the synthesis of protein, and the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats.  It aids in cell formation and cellular longevity.  In addition, vitamin B12 prevents nerve damage, maintains fertility, and promotes normal growth and development by maintaining the fatty sheaths that cover and protect nerve endings.  Vitamin B12 is linked to production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that assists memory and learning."

Why B6 and Folic Acid

Recent research is revealing that a multitude of health issues may be impacted dramatically by not only the B12 levels in the body but also the B6 and Folic Acid levels.  An optimal intake of folic acid will lower homocysteine levels if there are adequate levels of both vitamins B12 and B6.  Kilmer McCully, M.D. was discovering as early as the late 1960's that there was a direct association between the amino acid homosysteine and arteriosclerosis and plasma levels of B12, B6, and Folic Acid.  He theorized that high levels of homocysteine in the blood damaged the artery wall resulting in th formation of plaque as the body repaired the damage.  Researchers today are finding a direct association between elevated levels of homosysteine and cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease and osteoporosis.

What Form of B12 is Best?

The body needs B12 in the active form, which is methylcobalamin.  Unfortunately, the vast majority of supplements on the market contain B12 in the form of cyanocobalamin and are usually found in a pill form that is swallowed.  When a supplement containing B12 in the form of cyanocobalamin is taken, or when the B12 is liberated from food, the body must have a substance known as intrinsic factor to bond to the B12 and to transport it into the blood stream by way of the small intestines through the ileum for absorption.  As people age, they often secrete less hydrochloric acid (required to liberate B12 from food) as well as intrinsic factor since both are secreted  by the parietal cells of the stomach resulting in an inability to fully utilize dietary B12 regardless of the source.

Fortunately, there is a way to bypass all of this.  Researchers in the last few years have found that using B12 in a small caplet dissolved under the tongue allows for the absorption of the B12 directly into the blood stream thus by-passing the need for intrinsic factor and allowing for the rapid absorption and utilization of the B12 in the active (methylcobalamin form) it stands to reason that the best results would be achieved by using a sublingual caplet with B12 in the active form.
